In december, Holger facilitated a strategic workshop with the Caye Caulker chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association.
The workshop focused on sustainable tourism development, segmentation of the tourist market and marketing techniques.
The marketing angle of the workshop could be summed up by saying: “What tourists do we want on Caye Caulker and how can we put this island on the map for them?”
Caye Caulker is a paradise for young backpackers, partying groups and romantically inclined couples. It has preserved its fishing town charm (as opposed to San Pedro). In fact, the general wisdom says that you either like developed San Pedro or authentic, down-to-earth Caye Caulker. (We like both, for their differences).
The Caye Caulker BTIA asked me during the meeting if I was willing to donate the time needed to shoot a promotional video. (After they had just seen the tongue-in-cheek amateur reel we showed at the BTIA Annual General Meeting).
So we started our first really big project. Kerstin and I sat down, we designed a shooting schedule, came up with a creative concept and a rough outline for the editing. (Anyone who knows me well should be laughing at me working on a creative concept right now – I am really not a creative person).
We flew over to Caye Caulker for a weekend of shooting. It was hard work. Don’t get me wrong – we’ve spent countless awesome weekends on Caye Caulker with adventures, partying or relaxing. But that shooting weekend was hell – despite the really cool setup and management of the local BTIA reps. We were picked up at the airport with a golf cart and driven around to over 40 locations in 3 days. We camped out on hotel roofs at 4:30 am to capture the sunrises and usually concluded the day by shooting dinner and party stuff someplace. That was intense.
Then we got back to Belize City and the editing began.
The first two weeks must have been the most boring editing I have ever done. More than 4000 files (video and photo) had to be sorted, tagged, developed, rated, imported and moved around. I know why pros have assistants now.
The editing itself brought Final Cut Pro X and myself to the fringe of breaking down. No, that’s a lie. We did both break down. Usually one first shortly followed by the other.
But … we got it done and now it is online. There are so many people to thank for this and I have indeed thanked some of them in the video and some on facebook. I learned so much during the shooting. A bunch of people took pity on my mediocre footage and gave me some of their cool photos. We were hostd and fed and had our asses hauled around all day long by very patient golf cart drivers. We had models that did whatever I threw at them even though everyone involved figured out soon that this was a first for most of us.
So I will only thank Kerstin who is the bestest partner, helper, critic, model you can wish for. We both learned a lot together during the weeks that we worked on this, reviewed it countless times, criticized the heck out of each other but in the end were able (and proud) to present a video to the Caye Caulker folks that just may capture a bit of how beautiful their island is.
Enjoy the video!
A day on beautiful Caye Caulker!
