Nachdem Anfang letzter Woche Belize City von einer abnormalen Moskitoplage heimgesucht wurde, hat mind. einer dieser Fieslinge Holger mit Dengue Fieber angesteckt =(.

Since beginning of last week, Belize City was attacked by a paranormal plague of mosquitos. One of those little fellas contaminated Holger with Dengue Fever =(. 

 Zur Vorgeschichte

Prehistory

Normalerweise bekaempft die Stadt Belize City Moskitos indem einmal pro Woche Tankwagen mit Chemikalien die Stadt vernebeln und Moskitos toeten. Einmal die Woche, weil Moskitos wohl alle 7 Tage schluepfen. Nach letzter Woche hat man gesagt, dass die Frequenz der Spruehwagen erhoeht wird. Hier ein entsprechender Presse-Artikel:

Normally Belize City fights the mosquitos by spraying chemicals  from tank lorries once a week. Once a week because that is the time the mosquitos need to breeding and hatching. After last week, it was said that the frequency of the spraying will be increased. Here is a press release about it

Rein subjektiv betrachtet hat die Anzahl und Aggresivitaet der Moskitos seit letzter Woche tatsaechlich abgenommen. Freitag/Samstag/Sonntag hatten wir viel Regen und die Temperaturen sind auf ca 26 Grad gefallen*. Derzeit also etwas Ruhe von den Biestern. Kann natuerlich sein, dass sie nun umso mehr Boden zum Brueten haben.. hoffen wirs mal nicht.

Just from a personal point of view the amount and aggressivness of the mosquitos actually decreased since last week. Friday/Saturday/Sunday we had a lot of rain and the temperatures got back to 26C/84F*. So we have some time off from the beasts. Maybe they now have even more soil to breed… let’s not hope so.

*Das ist nicht nur als Abkuehlung mal ganz nett, sondern auch gut, da durch regelmaessigen Regen (der hier meist mit Sturm kommt) die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass sich ein Hurricane zusammenbraut, sinkt.

*It is not only a nice refreshing. With the regular rain (that mostly comes with storms here) the chances of a hurricane decrease.

Nun aber zu Holger

But now about Holger

Trotz diversem Einspruehen mit Mueckenspray und viel DEET (das Mittel im Mueckenzeug) in hoher Konzentration wurde er vielfach gestochen. Moskitostiche an sich haben hier verschiedene Stufen von “juckt nicht mal” (selten) ueber “nervig” (haeufig) bis “schwillt fies an und nervt mindestens 4 Tage” (1/3 aller Stiche) und “Tischtennisballgrosse Schwellung” (selten).

Despite numerous and frequent use of bug repellant (incl. high concentration of DEET.. the stuff in the repellant the mosquitos shouldn’t like) Holger got bitten a lot. The mosquito bites have several levels here: “not even itching” (rare) to “annoying” (a lot) to “swelling meanly and annoyes up to 4 days” (1/3 of all bites) and “big like a ping pong ball” (rare).

Da unsere Belizeanischen Freunde/Ex-Gastfamilie beide letzte Woche mit Dengue diagnostiziert wurden, waren wir schon sehr wachsam was die Symptome angeht. Vom Stich bis zur tatsaechlichen Krankheit kann es zwischen 3 und 14 Tagen dauern. Am Freitag hatte Holger dann diverse grippeaehnliche Symptome von Schwindel bis Kalt-Heiss-Gefuehl.

Since our Belizean friends/ex-host family both were diagnosed with Dengue, we already were caution about any symptoms. From the bite to the actual disease it can take between 3 to 14 days. Friday Holger had various symptoms already from dizziness to hot-and-cold-feeling.

Also sind wir am Abend ins Krankenhaus. Unsere deutsche Versicherung bestaetigte uns nach kurzem Anruf, dass wir in jedes Krankenhaus unsere Wahl gehen koennten. Das will man doch hoeren, oder? Also in die Privatklinik, die auch unsere Freunde aufgesucht hatten. Wir bekamen nach nur 10 Minuten Warten den Arzt zu sehen. Er untersuchte Holger und stellte Fieber fest. Da die Symptome noch nicht lange genug aktiv waren, konnte er noch keinen Bluttest machen. Der Bluttest arbeitet aufgrund der Antikoerper, die sich im Blut bilden und die sind erst nach min. 48 Stunden sichtbar.

So friday evening, we went to a hospital. After a short phone call, our German insurance confirmed that we can go to any hospital in the city. That’s nice to hear, isn’t it? So we went to that private hospital our friends went to, too.After about 10 minutes waiting we saw the doctor. He examined Holger and diagnosed fever already. Since Dengue can only be proofed with a blood test that counts the antibodies for the virus, we had to wait another 48 hours to make sure, his body had produced enough of them.

Am Samstagmorgen sind wir also wieder ins Krankenhaus zum Blutabnehmen. Nach drei Stunden war das Ergebnis auch schon da. Dengue-Fieber. Tolles Souvenir. =(

So, Saturday morning, we went back to the hospital for blood testing. After three hours, the results were there. Dengue-fever. Great souvenir =(

Der Arzt versicherte uns, dass man in den letzten Jahren einen rapiden Anstieg an Dengue-Faellen sieht. Er erklaerte aber auch, dass dies positiv ist, da die Mediziner entsprechend an Erfahrung gewinnen. Na prima…

The doctor ensured us that in the past years they had a huge increase in dengue patients. He also explained that this is good, since the doctors and medical industry gains experience with it. Great…

Fuer Holger heisst dies Tabletten nehmen, VIEL Ausruhen, KEINE Anstrengung, viel Wasser trinken.

Holger that means now taking pills, A LOT of resting, NO stress and a lot of drinking water.

Das Wochenende war entsprechend ruhig. Bis auf einen kleinen Spaziergang haben wir die Zeit im Apartment verbracht, Backgammon gespielt, gelesen und via Laptop “Futurama” und “24” geschaut und dem Regen zugeguckt. (Ihr erinnert Euch: Wir haben kein TV und kein Internet zuhause…)

The weekend was respectively calm. We stayed at home. A small walk around the block. Played Backgammon, read and watched “Futurama” and “24” via a laptop, watched the rain. (you remember.. no TV and internet at home)

Soweit geht es Holger gut. Er ist sehr muede und kleine Anstrengung (Spaziergang 500m) merkt er sofort. Die Tabletten und das viele Schlafen scheinen aber Fieber und Gelenkschmerzen etc. nicht schlimmer werden zu lassen. Von daher kann er sich normal bewegen und ihm tut auch nichts weh. Essen und Trinken geht auch alles gut. Von daher: Es klingt erstmal schlimm, aber macht Euch keine Sorgen! Ist leicht gesagt, aber er ist medizinisch gut versorgt und das Umfeld/Zuhause ist auch in Ordnung (keine Huette im Dschungel o.ae.). Er siecht nicht im Bett vor sich hin oder aehnliches! Wenn er dann mal wach ist, ist er fast munter wie immer und wir muessen schlichtweg warten bis das Dengue Fieber wieder vorbei ist. Dann geht es weiter mit neuen Abenteuern =)

As of now, Holger is doing pretty fine. He is very tired and small stress (like a walk, 500m) exhaust him. The pills and the lot of sleeping seem to stop the fever and bonepain. He can move normally. Food and Drinking is fine, too. So, it sounds dramatic, but please do not worry. It is an easy thing to say, but the medical treatment and the surrounding/apartment is ok (no hut in the jungle…), too.  He is not in major pain and close to death, so do not worry, he is doing fine. We just have to wait till the Dengue fever is gone before we can resume to new adventures =).
